bye bye cast

addison was being nosey yesterday.....
so today was the big day. chris and i got up bright and early this morning to take addison to her doctor appointment. it was with the orthopedic doctor. they were going to cut her cast off and take an x-ray, then see if she needed another cast. i really didn't want her to have to get another cast and i told myself that surely she wouldn't have to get another one.

when we went to see the doctor the first time, our appointment had to be fit in, and his office was packed. so for this appointment, i decided to get the first one. which was at 7 a.m. addison doesn't get up until 8:15-8:30, and then she eats breakfast after that. so i didn't know how well it would go getting her up early. i wanted to wait until the last possible minute to wake her up, because i didn't want to interrupt her sleeping. i mean, i don't like having my sleep interrupted, so i figured she wouldn't either.

she did not want to get up this morning. chris undressed her and i changed her diaper, and she still wouldn't wake up. finally, she woke up. and she was in a pretty good mood. i had everything packed up, so we just left right after we had her changed.

we were the first people in the doctor's office, so i knew the day was going to go well. my dad met us there, because we didn't know how long it would take and chris had to leave for work at 8. we went back with the nurse and she sawed off addison's cast. i think i was more afraid than addison was. addison just stared at her while she used the machine.
they had an x-ray machine in their office, so we didn't have to go to the out patient imaging center like we had to the last time. we just took her across the hall and had her x-ray and then waited about a minute and the doctor came to see us. he said her leg looked great and there was no need to put a cast on it! yay! i'm so glad babies heal so fast.

she doesn't really seem to notice that her cast is gone. maybe now she'll be able to crawl. we'll see!

9 months

today i took addison to her 9 month well-baby visit. i had a few questions for the doctor, but they were just 'this is my first baby, i don't know what to expect' kind of questions. the doc said she was looking great. she's got a big head (because of all the brains in there). she's actually in the 98 percentile for her head. lucky for me, she didn't have to get any shots. i don't do well with shots, so i didn't expect addison to do well either. but the doc did tell me she would get some on her next visit (which is at 1 year). so i'll make sure to bring chris with me that time!

addison is now used to having the cast on her leg. she actually likes to bang it against her crib or against the floor. i don't know if it feels good to do that, or if she just likes hearing the noise. it's kind of funny, because i can tell when she's awake before she starts babbling. all i hear are loud bangs. hopefully i won't hear those for a while though, because she should take a LONG nap this afternoon. and maybe i'll take one too.......

picture perfect

i've never really been much of a photographer, but now i'm taking A LOT of pictures. i try to take a lot of addison so i can share them with people, and also so i'll remember these days. i didn't take that many when she was little bitty (which i'm regretting now), but i'm trying to take as many as i can now. especially now that she has her cast and helmet.

i usually take pictures with my phone, and occasionally with my digital camera. but i borrowed my dad's camera yesterday and have been taking pictures like crazy. his camera is one of those big ones with the special lenses and all that jazz. it takes the best pictures. although i think i might be thinking that because it's a cool camera. but i really have enjoyed taking a lot of pictures of addison.

here are some of the pictures i've taken so far of addison (and some of our dog, tybee).

milestones

for a while, i thought addison was teething. well, that was a good 3 months ago, and still no teeth. i started to worry, but her doctor told me that some babies don't get teeth until their first birthday. so who knows when addison will get her first tooth. i've read that you can tell when your baby is going to get teeth by how old the parents were when they got their first tooth. well, neither of us know that. so that's not very helpful. i check addison's mouth everyday (which she hates). it's actually kind of funny.

another thing that addison has yet to do is crawl. and now that she has her cast, i'm kind of doubting she'll be able to. at least not until she gets that thing off. maybe she'll just go straight to walking. but if she's anything like me (i didn't walk until 17 months), she'll be fine just laying around for a while. i would laugh if once she gets the cast off, she starts crawling immediately. who knows.

she does love to jump in her jump-a-roo though. it's kind of hard for her to now with the cast, but she's figured it out. my mom (gigi to addison) bought addison a walker, so addison has been enjoying that too. she can only go backwards now, but i'm sure she'll figure out how to go forward soon enough.

i guess it's just a waiting game on the teeth, crawling and walking now!

broken bone

so, i kind of held back a little bit on yesterday's blog. it was getting pretty long, and i was getting pretty tired. so i decided to put this part off until today.

let me just start by saying, sometimes things just happen. i'm trying not to blame myself, but it's really hard not to. and i just have to keep telling myself that.

saturday, addison rolled off our bed while i had my back turned. she cried (obviously), but she calmed down after a little while. chris and i thought about taking her to the hospital, but she seemed to be ok. so we decided to let her sleep and see how she was in the morning. she slept fine, and when she woke up she acted like she normally does. the only thing was that she wouldn't put any weight on her left leg. chris and i both tried to get her to, but she would just cry when we tried. so, my mom came over and looked at it. we had all moved it around, poked at it, and she didn't care at all. we decided to give it one more night and i would call the doctor first thing monday morning and make an appointment to get it checked out.

so, early monday morning we went to the doctor. he looked at her leg and she didn't care what he was doing. she was cool with it. didn't cry or anything. he wanted to get some x-rays, so we went over to the hospital and got that done. when we finally got back to the doctor's office (for the 3rd time) they told us that addison's leg was broken. of course, i took it pretty hard.
we were able to go get addison a cast that afternoon. the doctor was an hour behind schedule (which isn't something you want to hear when you have an 8 month old, especially one with a broken leg). luckily, the doctor was really nice and helpful. on a side note, i've never had a broken bone, so i didn't know what to expect. it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be, and addison just sat there and stared at the doctor while he wrapped up her leg.

so addison now has a pink helmet and a yellow cast. the doc said she would probably have to wear the cast for 4 weeks, but we'll see at her appointment. as for now, i have a child that looks like she's being thrown around. but i promise you, she is not. i'm just trying to prepare myself for the looks i will receive when we go out in public.

hoping for a fast and easy healing!
